In Memoriam: Professor Shigeto Yamawaki (1954–2026)
The Asian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (AsCNP) mourns the passing of Professor Shigeto Yamawaki on June 8, 2026.
Professor Yamawaki was the Founding President of AsCNP and one of the architects of modern Asian neuropsychopharmacology.
He firmly believed that Asia should play a leading role in advancing neuroscience, psychopharmacology, and psychiatric therapeutics. Through his vision and leadership, AsCNP was established as a platform connecting researchers and clinicians across the region, fostering scientific collaboration, and nurturing future generations of leaders.
In addition to his leadership of AsCNP, Professor Yamawaki served as President of the Japanese Society of Neuropsychopharmacology (JSNP) and President of the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP). He was a tireless advocate for translational neuroscience, psychiatric drug development, international collaboration, and the advancement of evidence-based mental health care.
Many of today’s leaders in Asian neuropsychopharmacology benefited directly from his mentorship, encouragement, and friendship. His influence extended far beyond his own scientific achievements and continues through the vibrant community that he helped create.
Professor Yamawaki’s passing is a great loss for AsCNP and for the international neuropsychopharmacology community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, trainees, and all who had the privilege of working with him.
His legacy will continue to inspire future generations across Asia and beyond.
